Google to be punished for search monopoly by next August: Judge
According to the New York Times, a federal judge has said he will postpone sentencing in the Google antitrust case by August 2025. Earlier this month, he ruled that Google had abused its monopoly power over the search industry.
Judge Amit P. Mehta set a deadline for the cure phase of Google’s antirust lawsuit during a hearing in Washington, D.C. on Friday, the outcome of which could change the way people find information on the Internet. Prosecutors have until the end of the year to submit their proposals, which could take aim at billions of dollars in payments Google made to Apple in exchange for priority placement, or potentially order Google to sell off parts of its business.
However, a lot can change in a year, especially given the upcoming US presidential election. Both Republican and Democratic donors are reportedly asking candidates to change the strict US regulatory environment. The outcome of the Google Search antitrust case could be on the table in those discussions.
